What can go wrong with standard 'Dry Cleaning' instead of using specialist 'Fur Cleaning'!
Now that Autumn is here you will be thinking about any cleaning, repairs and remodels your fur might need to perform perfectly this Winter. If your fur needs a clean be sure to book our specialist fur cleaning service... here's a case study of what usually goes wrong with standard dry cleaning!
An understandably distressed client arrives with a distorted fur coat - heat is no friend of fur and here the dry cleaner has used too much heat either in the drumming process or with a steam iron. The obviously distorted areas are ringed in red.
Once the coat is opened up and all the facings stripped back you can see the darkened hide where the skin has shrunk and split, plus the puckering of the surrounding skin as its drawn in around the shrinkage.
Here is an example of how flat and even it should look all over.
Some heat damage can be stretched back out while the skins are wet, stapled into place and then left to dry in the new position. This is delicate work needing to be done by an experienced furrier who knows how far the skins and threads can be pushed before you create more splits. There will always need to be some patching in of new fur where the damage is too extensive. Once stretched back to the original pattern shape and repaired the skins will then need to be softened with a specialist blend of reconditioning oils.
After closing the fur garment back up here are some photos showing the restored shape of the jacket. A happy client is now reunited with her favourite fur coat - A good day in the workshop!
- Always bring your fur coat to your furrier for specialist fur cleaning.
- Don't be tempted to iron out any creased linings - hanging your coat in a steamy bathroom (well away from the water) while you do your ablutions should bring out most creases.
- If you have a synthetic lining we strongly recommend having your coat relined in silk - where creates drop out naturally with body heat.
Have a very snuggly, furry winter season and we look forward to seeing you at the Bewitched Couture studio soon. Email us on firstname.lastname@example.org to book an appointment at our Wiltshire studio or call 07747625066.
